The Secret Recipe for a Knitted Baby Hat That Fits Every Time
Whether you're knitting a hat to donate to a baby in the NICU or to a loved one, hats make a great practical gift for babies and new parents. One of the trickiest parts of baby knitting is sizing. Read on for baby hat knit sizes.
How do you know what size fits best?
To help you make baby hats in a variety of sizes, here's a list to help you decide which hat size to make so you don't make your hat too big or too small when winter hits.
Average baby head size by size
Premature infant head size: 9 inches in circumference and 4 inches in height
Neonatal size: 11 inches girth, 5 inches high
0-3 months size: 13" girth, 6" high
3-6 months size: 16" girth, 7" high
6-9 months size: 18" girth, 7.5" high
12 months size: 20 inches girth, 8 inches high
24-4T size: 21 inches in circumference, 8.5 inches in height
Using the sizing information above, here is the formula to determine how many stitches you need in a round to knit this baby hat size:
Circumference (inches) x stitches per inch = number of castings
